There won't be any postings to the blog on Monday or Tuesday (and perhaps Wednesday, but we'll see). I'll be helping campaign for Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick (R-PA 8), in Bucks Co., Pennsylvania.
Why am I helping out Mike Fitzpatrick, when he is considered one of the more moderate voices in the House of Representatives? Read on below...
1. Mike voted to kill the death tax several times, to expand tax-free retirement savings opportunities, to keep the pro-growth tax cuts on capital gains, dividends, and small business expensing, and to repeal the Spanish-American War telephone tax. He received a perfect score on tax votes from Americans for Tax Reform.
2. Mike is a cosponsor of H.R. 1581, the "Simplify Tax Filing for Seniors Act," which would create a senior-specific "short" tax form.
3. Mike is a cosponsor of H.R. 4625, the "Health Care Freedom of Choice Act," which would remove the 7.5% of AGI threshold for the deduction of medical expenses for itemizers. According to his website, Mike wants to go even farther and allow self-employed health insurance premiums to be pre-SECA in the same way that incorporated business health premiums are pre-FICA.
4. Mike Fitzpatrick has signed ATR's "Taxpayer Protection Pledge," which obliges him to oppose any increase in personal or corporate marginal tax rates, and to oppose taking away deductions or credits unless matched dollar-for-dollar with marginal rate tax cuts.
Most of all, Mike needs to be one of 218 members of Congress voting to keep the GOP in control of the Ways and Means Committee. The alternative would be a Chairman Charlie Rangel, who has said he wouldn't keep any of the Bush tax cuts--including marriage penalty relief, the child tax credit, or lowering the double taxation of capital gains and dividends.
